Race Report for the
18th February 2012 Swan Hill Speedway.
Our race meeting on Saturday night was a great
success. A very good crowd showed up to support Sonic Speedway.
The night was still and quite warm which helped keep
people at the track. Racing was very fast and furious over the night.
The 3 Litre Class had some very good heats with few
incidents, and with the final being a twenty lap event the cars settled in
for a battle of the best. Troy Simpson , Zac Swanson and Will Lamb fought
for the top spot, but when Will Lamb got the lead he was very hard to beat,
coming up trumps with the chequered flag. Troy Simpson came in second and
Zac Swanson third.
The VSC Juniors raced well, it was good to see Jordan
Ewart out racing in his brand new car. After scrutinizing the car they
noticed they had a problem with their radiator and had to take the car back
home to Beverford to fix it. He didn’t make it back for the first heat but
he raced well over the night. In the final race Kayla Mannix started well
with Josh Wirth, Zane Thomas and Josh Campbell doing their best, when Kayla
was forced out of the event with car problems, followed by Zane Thomas who
retired. Hayden Glare and Curtis Carrison had an accident which put them
both out. With only a few laps to go we ended up with two cars left on the
track and a parking lot in the middle. The winner was Josh Wirth followed
by Josh Campbell.
The Standard Saloons had a small field for the
evening with only 4 cars this week, however this didn’t take away from the
competitiveness. Racing was still good to watch, with Ken Higgins finishing
every heat and not being distracted by his passenger Helen, who was
observing and learning the finer arts of race driving. Ken wasn’t good
enough to win the finals though as Claude Pearson came out winner of the
event, Lee Bruton coming second, and Ken third. Claude Pearson seems to be
racing in this class very well after coming from the Street Stocks.
VSC Formula 500s had a very good line up with Malcolm
Gammon and Damien McKenzie returning to bolster the numbers. During the
heats Andrew Maconachie was racing hard against the Beasys and the tussle
was good to watch. Damien McKenzie had problems and only raced in one
event. In the final it was fast action with TJ Beasy and Colin Adams
swapping first and second position a few times, when TJ spun, and the race
had to be restarted. At the finish it was Colin Adams over the line first,
followed by Garry Beasy second and Malcolm Gammon third. TJ was penalized
by the Chief Steward and was moved to rear position at the restart of this
final.
V8 Super Modifieds were back in the action with 6
cars running. Tammie Edwards , Grant Schulz and Doug Pennell our new
drivers raced pretty well up against Ian Foster , Michael and Roger Thomson
our experienced drivers. These cars are a good and exciting class to watch
with the V8 motor roaring down the track. The winner of the night was
Michael Thomson, Ian Foster second and young Tammie Edwards in her second
event came third.
The Street Stocks were pretty fiery throughout the
night with lots of push and shove. Leighton Warburton hit the wall, which
put him out for the night, also Jeremy Grant had an accident forcing his
retirement for the night. One of the visiting drivers from Mildura had his
car catch alight which was extinguished by our local CFA volunteers. The
final proved to be very fast and furious and Lewis Clarke, Andrew Carmichael
and Richard Bansemer competed hard for the top three positions, with the
rest of the field following close behind. Andrew Carmichael was not quite
quick enough forLewis Clarke, who ended up with the Flag, followed by
Carmichael from Swan Hill and Richard Bansemer from Horsham. Overall it was
a good night of entertainment and was great to see so many spectators
staying to the end to watch the all of the racing. Next Meeting will be the
AMCA Victorian State Title held on the Saturday 17th March, with
all support Classes racing on the night as well.
